I’m a sucker for annual game shows, and there’s been a massive amount of new games shown off already in the 2024 Summer Game Fest. One game in particular caught my eye while I was frantically searching up showcased games on Steam to add to my wishlist during today’s Wholesome Direct.
Restore an old farm, nurture your dragon pals, and explore a whimsical world filled with charm and wonder.
Dragon Shelter by developer Wild Forest Studio is an upcoming cozy farming sim where your goal is to rebuild your grandfather’s farm and restore the power of friendship and happiness to the local village. But this time, you’ll do it with the help of adorable little dragons. Humans and dragons apparently once coexisted, but over time human hearts have hardened and become closed to such friendship. While a bit tropey, I do love this idea of dragons’ magic and empathy being used to bring joy, love, and peace to a forlorn world. According to the developer, the idea behind this game stems from an overall cold, disconnected feeling in our modern world: “In present times, there’s a lack of emotional warmth and tranquility, so we decided to create a small world of our own, to where people would like to return again and again. That’s how the idea for Dragon Shelter appeared…”
The game promises multiple dragon species with unique personalities and abilities. Training your dragons will be a vital part of the gameplay, to keep them out of trouble, as they “get into places they shouldn’t, and basically do what dragons like – being dragons.” They’ll also help you out with your array of farming sim game tasks like chopping wood, mining, cooking, etc.
So far the art and animations are looking incredibly promising. It’s obvious a lot of care is going into the design of the world, characters, and especially the dragons. Here’s hoping the gameplay and story shine just as much!
